Named for Oklahoma’s legendary crystals, the Rose Rock Daughters’ roots run four generations deep. “We got our humor from our dad’s side of the family,” says Kaycie who plays violin and sings. “We crack ourselves up all the time.”

From their mother’s side comes a rich legacy of Christian faith, given by their great-grandmother who was a prayer warrior and a woman of the land.

That legacy blossoms in their new album God of the Mountain, a vibrant collection of beloved hymns inspired by the life of Moses. Kallie, who plays piano and harp, says, “When we first began to gather material, it seemed random - we just chose songs that we liked. Then as we were reading the lyrics, a light switch came on, and we saw these parallels with the story of Moses - the burning bush, the mountain of God, the Passover, and the Promised Land. These images are all about the name of God being revealed to mankind. That’s the name we want to glorify - the name of Jesus.”

The album brings together spirituals and hymns that are earthy and elevated just like these classically-trained/down-home singers. “A Mighty Fortress”, “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need”, and “Higher Ground” introduce timeless theological depth to the proceedings while “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and “I’ll Fly Away” evoke church-in-the-wildwood joy.

Not every song met with instant agreement. “Kaycie was adamant that we sing the old spiritual, “Ride On, Moses”, and we were like, “How are three girls like us going to pull that off? But we found a fresh take!” says Kallie.

The last year has given birth to new creativity as the Daughters began arranging some of their own songs and co-producing in the studio. The marriage of new and old styles was eclectic. “We wanted “Rock of Ages” to have a driving roots-style guitar sound,” says Kambrie, the youngest and a mandolin virtuoso. “We even added Americana-style spoons to give “Ride On Moses” a fun, percussive sound. Yes, we get crazy ideas sometimes!” Kaycie chimes in.

The end result is an album that soars and rip-roars with Gospel themes and string fever. Like the old prophet who led his people to a new home, God of the Mountain reflects the faith, family history, and love of the land that defines them.

About The Songs

  1. Man of Sorrows
“We were drawn to the theological richness of these lyrics. Moses raised the image of the snake in the wilderness, and all who looked upon it were healed of their wounds. In a similar way, Jesus said that when He was lifted up on the Cross, He would draw all people to Himself. That’s what “Man of Sorrows” is about: the love of Jesus that draws us to repentance.”

  2. Higher Ground
“The image of the mountain is at the heart of this project. It was the great image in the life of Moses, whether it was ascending Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments or ascending Mount Pisgah to see the Promised Land before he died. We want to be like Moses - always climbing to a higher place with God.”

  3. Praise to the Lord
“Praise To The Lord” is one of the great hymns of the faith, and one that we immediately knew we wanted to record.  Our favorite line in the song is “Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with His love He befriend thee.”  We love that this is a German hymn because we have German roots on our dad’s side of the family!"

  4. Rock of Ages
““Rock of Ages” was one of the last songs we added to the album. We were all reading and praying separately during our quiet time, and God spoke to each of us that we should record this song!  It turned out to be one of the coolest renditions!”

  5. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need
“Isaac Watts, the great hymnodist, paraphrased Psalm 23 and wrote this gorgeous song. It evokes the “shepherd’s heart” of Moses in the days when he watched over Jethro’s flocks on the foothills of Mount Sinai. Kambrie’s higher register fit the tune beautifully.”

  6. A Mighty Fortress
“This hymn is our mother’s favorite. It’s a courageous song, and it took courage to record it! The music is so majestic, it can be a little intimidating! But as we arranged it, the power of the words inspired us. It turned into one of the best tracks on the album.”

  7. I Want That Mountain
“This is one of the songs we had never heard before! We learned it when visiting a neighboring church, and as we were singing it one night, we said, “Hey! We could do this in a Texas Swing feel!” Kambrie (who is quite the comedienne) piped up, “I’m all for more Roy Rogers songs!” The message reminds us of the journey to the Promised Land. We don’t want to be like the children of Israel who were afraid of entering the Land and fighting the giants that lived there. We want that mountain!”

  8. Flee As A Bird
“Robin Wolaver, our producer and teacher, suggested that we consider recording “Flee As A Bird”. It’s a song that has sadly been all but forgotten. Its poignant beauty speared us.  Its message is one of hope for those who have grown weary under the burden of sin.”

  9. There Is A Fountain
“We sang this hymn a cappella because we wanted to let the words speak for themselves. They touch the very heart of this album.”

  10. All Hail The Power of Jesus’ Name
“How do you re-imagine a timeless hymn like “All Hail The Power of Jesus’ Name”? Our rendition reflects the tremendous sense of triumph in the words.”

  11. Ride on Moses
“We first heard “Ride On Moses” in the classic Golden Gate Quartet recording. Kaycie, who is our risk-taker and visionary, was adamant that we add it to the album. The rest of us weren’t so sure. Can three young voices from Oklahoma find the right vibe for an old spiritual? But we worked hard and found an arrangement that we love. Kaycie was right (as usual)!”

  12. I’ll Fly Away
“Psalm 90 tell us that when we leave this life, we will “fly away” to Heaven. That’s a joy and a hope that we want to share with everyone.”

  13. Sweet Hour of Prayer
“It says in the Old Testament that Moses was a friend of God, so much so that God buried Moses Himself when he died. That intimacy is reflected in this lovely song.”
